A day's training on computer literacy for 35 students.

Location Machakos, Kenya

The mission of Kenya Connect is to empower children and youth to better their world by improving education, facilitating service learning, and promoting authentic cross cultural exchange. Enabled by 21st century technology, students in 54 schools in rural Wamunyu, Kenya trade ideas with pen pal partners in the US and other developed nations,  sharing science lessons, art projects, and the sheer enthusiasm of eager learners yearning to find connections across geographical and cultural boundaries.  Students on both sides of the exchange gain vital skills in communication and insight into global issues, creating powerful connections between individuals and communities. A natural outcome of many of  these  relationships has been student-generated fundraising projects,  spearheaded by informed and inspired students wishing to make a difference in the lives of their pen pals.  Students find creative ways to gather pennies, from Read-a-Thons to Penny Wars, to support improvement projects in their partner schools in Kenya. Other important efforts to improve the education of Kenyan school children have included de-worming, provision of sports equipment, building hand washing stations, water tanks, and critical repairs at dozens of schools.  The recent completion of a beautiful Learning Resource Center has enabled Kenya Connect to offer computer literacy classes, a library, and teacher trainings; all geared towards improving educational outcomes while connecting the community of Wamunyu to the 21st century.
