Sochea is 8 years old. She has 7 brothers and sisters, her father died and her mother has no means of earning a living. She has never been to school and without an education she has little chance of escaping a life of poverty and depravation.
Opportunity Cambodia was established to enable children like Sochea, living in some of the poorest rural villages in Cambodia, to have an education and the opportunity to live their dreams, and to become healthy, self-empowered members of their society.
We have built a children's education centre in the heart of a poor rural village in Siem Reap Province, the third poorest province in Cambodia. Here the children receive the essentails necessary to provide a firm foundation for learning - nutritious food, healthcare, clothing, school materials, support and encouragement. Some of the children at our Centre board on a weeky basis and others are day students.
The children attend the local school for half a day which is all the Government system provides, and we provide additional teaching and activities for the rest of the day. Our objective is for the children not only to learn, but to have the opportunity to develop their interests and talents in physical, creative and cultural pursuits as well as just to have fun and enjoy life. We carefully monitor the health and progress of each child.
It is remarkable how quickly the children respond to our program - their health improves, their energy and confidence increases and they achieve good results at school. Our commitment to the children is to support them through school, and then to ensure they receive appropriate tertiary education and/or vocational training so that they are equipped to earn their own living.
Our priority is the care and education of the children at our Centre, however we also provide vocational training for young adults in the villages who have no skills and no way of earning a living.
We would be delighted if you wished to support our project and enable our wonderful children to have a brighter future.
However in order to protect the privacy and safety of the children, we do not allow visitors to our Centre, other than in exceptional circumstances.
